February has come, bringing a new holiday to our doorsteps- Valentine’s Day. And if you live anywhere on this planet, you’ll probably find all stores and shopping malls near you teeming with cute teddy bears, greeting cards bearing romantic messages, and boxes upon boxes of chocolates. But as everywhere you look is dyed red and pink these days, wouldn’t your romantic day feel just a bit more special if you gave it a tint of green? This year, give February 14th the meaning it deserves by skipping the traditional and eco unfriendly, and add some creativity to your message of love. Consider the following:
Go for a romantic dinner. Make a reservation at a restaurant specializing in seasonal, regional cuisine that’s 100% organic. If you’re planning on taking your special someone out for an expensive dinner, why not check out fundraisers in the area that support environmental projects? If you’re going for a more intimate affair, look for fresh, organic ingredients at your local farmer’s market and whip up a feast for two at your candlelit home.
Say it with flowers- organic ones. The floral industry uses some of the most powerful pesticides out there, polluting waterways and leading to poor working conditions. Most flowers are also shipped to your door from hundreds of miles away, leaving a considerable carbon footprint. For a more considerate gesture, buy locally-grown flowers that are in season, and create your own unique bouquet.
Surprise your sweet with some sweets. Instead of the traditional box of bonbons, buy organic and fair-trade chocolates which ensure that workers receive a decent wage on plantations.
Opt for green glitter. If nothing says romance like jewelry, then try pieces made from recycled metal or look for a jeweler who deals in diamonds that were not obtained through the support of slavery or child labor.
Give the gift of time. Time spent together will most likely be cherished over any costly item. So this Valentine, think of fun, romantic activities for two. This year Valentine’s falls on a Saturday, so take advantage of this opportunity to travel. Plan a getaway to an eco spa and get pampered with your loved one beside you, or book yourself into an eco hotel amidst a natural paradise and get in touch with nature on your green travels. For ideas, check out some of the green hotels on the site and the activities they have to offer to plan your romantic getaway.
This coming Valentine’s Day, show your loved one you care by caring for the environment as well. Add a little extra touch and make not only your sweetheart happy, but your family, friends, and co-workers as well.
