Whether to travel, get to work, pick the kids up from school, or simply go to the supermarket, we always seem to be driving our cars somewhere. And every time we do so, we are contributing to the detriment of our environment through CO2 emissions. So considering we can’t stop moving altogether, how can we get from point A to point B without harming the environment in the process?
Just swap your car for one or several of the alternatives below.
Bikes: They’re efficient and emission-free. Riding a bike to work or to complete your errands not only improves the health of the environment, but yours as well. It’s a great way to exercise on a daily basis and saves you money as well.
Public transport: Why spend time looking for a place to park your car when you can take the bus or subway?
Carpool: Get to know your colleagues, neighbors, and children’s friends a little better.
Electric cars: They produce no CO2 emissions or noise, thus cutting down on air and noise pollution. They also have fewer moving parts, which makes your trips to the mechanic’s much less frequent.
Cars that run on biodiesel: Biodiesel is a nontoxic and biodegradable alternative to regular diesel fuel. It is made from vegetable oil, waste grease, animal fats, and other organic materials. Because biodiesel is carbon-neutral, it is considered much greener than gasoline-powered cars.
Hybrid cars: These cars combine two power systems and usually include an electric motor charged by a gasoline engine. They are 25 to 40 percent more efficient than regular cars, and because they use less fuel per mile, CO2 emissions are less.
Of course the alternative will always depend on where you’re going, the rush you’re in, and the roads you must take. But whatever the alternative you choose, just remember that it’s always better than you regular, gasoline-fueled car.
