Green Gifting

A big part of going on vacation is coming back home with a bunch of fun and unique souvenirs for family and friends, and some for yourself, to remind you of your trip. However, considering the myriad of souvenir shops and stands out there, and the variety of objects for sale, souvenir hunting can soon become a hassle. To make your souvenir shopping more stress-free, all that you need is to simplify your choices and think green.

Here’s what to look for in an eco-friendly souvenir:

• Choose souvenirs made from sustainable materials. Do not buy products made from endangered species, hard woods, or ancient artifacts. Many souvenirs made from certain kinds of fur, ivory, tortoiseshell, and various reptile skins are not only increasing your negative impact on the environment, but cannot be legally imported into certain countries, and may result in a fine or worse.

• Buy from locally-owned businesses. This supports the local economy.

• Look for locally- produced items. By buying crafts made locally, you are supporting the people who live in the community you are visiting. Plus, souvenirs made locally do not have to travel long distances to get to the souvenir shop or stand. Remember that long-distance shipping of products burns fossil fuels and contributes pollutants to the atmosphere.

• Buy something the region is known for. Items not typically found elsewhere tend to be made locally, and make for a unique gift.

• Think lightweight and small. The heavier the souvenir, the more resources it must burn in order to reach its final destination, and the greater its impact on the environment.

Souvenirs are a special way of remembering the places you’ve visited and sharing your vacation with your loved ones. To make these souvenirs more memorable, try to seek out sustainable souvenirs instead of the typical t-shirt or mug that, more likely than not, has been manufactured thousands of miles from the vacation destination your wish to remember.
