The historic and world-renowned Broadmoor Hotel, located in Colorado Springs, recently underwent a major lighting upgrade bringing outdated lighting into the 21st century with green technology.
The Broadmoor isn’t a stranger to green initiatives. They’ve already shown their dedication to greening the hotel industry by participating in environmentally conscious programs in water and energy use and waste generation. However, since lighting is the second largest energy consumer in a hotel and the most cost-effective in reducing energy costs, it was a logical next green step for them.
Norman, Oklahoma-based energy service provider, PCG, LLC, proposed and installed over 30,000 energy-efficient lamps at The Broadmoor in less than 60 days. In the hotel facilities, the replacement of incandescent exterior and interior lighting with cold cathode lamps and LEDs, resulted in up to 90% energy savings.
Overall, the upgrade will pay back in 1.3 years with an annual energy reduction of over 4.9 million kWh. This is the equivalent of nearly 10,000 barrels of crude oil that will not be burned by power plants, eliminating the pollution from 750 cars in a year, or the planting of 1,554 trees per year. Now that’s making an impact.
Thanks to this lighting upgrade, The Broadmoor now sports an energy-efficient lighting system that softens the impact on the environment, enhances the overall performance of its properties, and gives ecotravelers a greener peace of mind.
