By participating in ecotravel to remote areas around the world, do we contaminate and pollute too many countries with tourism? Are we putting too many stresses on indigenous populations around the world by trying to modernize them?

That's a hard question to answer. On one hand, people learn so much from travel that I think it's really important, but on the other hand, of course the local cultures are changed irreversibly. But I think this is probably inevitable.

I don’t think by going on an ecovacation we are trying to modernize local cultures. We are really not trying to invade their traditions, or trying to change them.

I'm in the middle of the road on this one. Anthony Bourdain recently visited a small village in Vietnam and his guide mentioned that issue. Anthony stated that it broadens our horizons to see this culture, but there's also a problem with bringing too much attention to an area such as this. I think we just need to show respect for the culture and not offend with cameras or big busses. Which, of course, us eco-trotters would never do! :D
