What do you look for in planning an eco vacation? How much do you actually investigate the sustainable practices of the hotel?

Do you look for something extremely eco, or are you content to book with a hotel that is even just a little more eco than the average hotel?

Recently, I’ve been trying to choose more eco destinations and accommodations. First of all, an eco vacation is not just about staying at an eco hotel, so there’s a lot to consider. The way to get there, the activities that I’ll do and the places I’ll visit. Of course, if I choose an eco hotel, then my planning can be simplified. I mean, eco hotel staff usually know things to do and places to eat that are environmentally friendly. Plus, they might even offer green tours and a menu with organic ingredients. So I do try to find out about the hotel’s eco standards. I check out the hotel’s website and if I can’t find anything on their website referencing their eco practices, I just don’t bother with that hotel. If I have some questions, I usually email. Of course if I don’t get an answer, I take it as a sign that they don’t care about their eco image. I realize that depending on the place I visit and my budget, my aspirations for a completely eco hotel are limited. So if I can’t find a hotel that’s 100% eco, I try to balance it out with the things that I do during my vacation, how I get from one place to the next, the souvenirs I buy, and things like that.

Many hotels can be just a little eco, but that’s really not enough. So I have my own eco standards that a hotel must meet. If I check out the hotel’s website, and those standards are met and I like the look of the hotel, I usually book. If a hotel is certified, then I try to find out about that particular certification. If it isn’t, that’s not necessarily a sign that it’s not eco, so I find out what it offers or doesn’t offer. I’ve noticed that hotels that are really eco can answer your questions about environmentally-friendly practices, and those that can’t, are not really eco.
